COACH BERNIE SHER

I was raised in New York and spent a full career in both the Air Force (Ret. Lt. Col.) and the private sector (Partner: Southfork Systems) before retiring in 1997. I have an undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and an MA in Business from Central Michigan University.

I have been a competitive age group athlete since running my first 10K road race in 1978. I have run all distances up through the marathon, including a Boston marathon PR of 2:58. Additionally, I have either won my age group or placed in the top five in many major road races throughout the country.

I started competing in triathlon in 1983 and have accumulated a number of accomplishments in the sport some of which are listed below. I have also qualified and competed in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona in 1995, 1997, & 1998 placing 5th, 8th and 8th respectively.

BernieCard2.jpgIn 2004, I was one of 20  out of more than 1,200 chosen for Lance Armstrong's Tour of Hope Team.  The event, sponsored by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Bristol Myers Squibb was an eight-day relay-style ride from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness for cancer research and clinical trials. As a cancer survivor and the oldest member on the team, it was an honor to be able to represent what cancer research has been able to accomplish in our country.
