I believe that there is more to coaching than preparing an athlete to do well in a race. A coach must be flexible and take into account the person’s entire makeup including athletic skills, mindset, stress levels and lifestyle.

My approach encompasses three main areas: physical, mental and ethical. The physical part is actually the most straight forward. It takes into account a person’s strengths, weaknesses, time constraints and goals. I aim to develop a training plan that provides balance in all three sports; improving weak areas while maintaining or improving strengths.

I also feel that it is important to prepare the clients mentally for the challenges they face throughout training and racing. Many of the mental strategies in triathlon can also be applied to daily living. I aim to not only provide the “how”, but also the “why”.

Further, I believe that it is important to provide guidance concerning the ethical aspects of our sport and to provide the understanding that obeying the rules is not situational.  I believe that it is important to teach that being gracious in victory or defeat is the essence of good sportsmanship.

Lastly, I try to instill the understanding that there is no ‘magic bullet’ toward success.  Hard work and commitment are the key.
